Dulwich Pudong Sports Teams Achieve Outstanding Results
We love our sports at Dulwich Pudong and we were fortunate this autumn and winter to enjoy competitive fixtures for the first time in nearly two years! It added a jolt of excitement to see our students back on the court, the field, the pitch, and in the pool striving for their very best against the best competition around.
We wanted to share with you the incredible results our athletes achieved during the autumn and winter sports seasons. It's our way to celebrate the hours of training put in by our students and their coaches and to honor their determination and resiliency. Panther Pride!
Netball
Our Netball teams were nearly unstoppable this year! Our D1 team under Coach Kaz Peart were runners up in SISAC, whilst our D2 team under Coaches Kaz Peart and Faye Hardy came home as 2021 champions!
"I have been so proud of the D1 & D2 teams this season," says Coach Peart. "Even though there were many last-minute fixture cancellations, they continued to be dedicated and enthusiastic in training which resulted in some fantastic results on court when we did get the opportunity to play. The D2 team, consisting of many girls playing senior level for the first time, made incredible progress which can only mean a promising future for Dulwich Netball!"
Rugby
Our D1 and D2 Rugby teams under Coaches Andy Coomer (D1) and Coach Will Hutchings (D2) achieved impressive results going undefeated and winning friendlies against arch-rivals SAS Puxi.
Says Coach Andy Coomer, "As a coaching team we were so impressed with the performances and attitude of all the students who worked extremely hard for one another, displaying respect and sportsmanship towards their opponents in the process."
Volleyball
Our Boys D1 team under Coach Allan Kerr took 3rd place in the SISAC tournament and were runners up in the ACAMIS tournament. D1 Girls under Coach Suzanne Edwards placed 4th in the ACAMIS tournament. D2 Boys under Coach Brandon Entwistle took 2nd in SISAC.
Table Tennis
In November six of our Table Tennis players, under Coach Ruru Zhang, competed in the SISAC Table Tennis Tournament hosted by YCIS Puxi. Our students performed well on the day, with our team placing 3rd overall.
Says Coach Zhang, "I was very impressed with the students. They all did a great job in each match. They encouraged each other, cheered their teammates, applauded for each other, and gave each other advice. That’s awesome teamwork. Very proud of them!"
Basketball
Our Girls and Boys D1 and D2 teams each achieved remarkable results. D1 Girls under Coach Elle Coughlan were crowned champions of the SISAC East Division whilst our D1 Boys under Coach Luke Devlin won second place in the SISAC East Division.
D2 Boys under Coach Scott Murphy also placed 2nd in the SISAC East Division whilst our D2 Girls under Coach Elle Coughlan placed 3rd in the SISAC East Division.
Coach Coughlan says, “After a long absence, the basketball squads have done a phenomenal job returning to the court and sparking some excitement. The dedication demonstrated from the players, showcasing their ability to be a team, striving for success, and ultimately uniting has made the coaches and College proud of their high achievements.”
Football
The Girls C1 (Year 7-9) under Coach John Trinder was very strong this year losing only once. The Boys C1 team (Year 7-9) under Coach Matt Gilvary and our C2 Team under Coach Michael Wrynne had a very enjoyable and successful season, recording wins against NAIS, Wellington, and Concordia.
Finally Coach Andrew Coomer and Elle Coughlan organised a fun 4x4 tournament with Harrow Shanghai. The emphasis was fully on participation with students entering their own teams and deciding their own names and kit.
Dulwich Earthquakes (DEQ)
DEQ U11 and U15 football teams competed in the Panyi Cup. The U11 team won their division to earn a place in the finals where they will compete against winners from other Shanghai regions.
DEQ also entered U8, U11, and U14 teams in the Panyi Tournament in October. The U8 team were a penalty shootout from reaching the finals of their category, ending with a much-deserved bronze medal. The U11s came second in their category winning four out of five of their group matches to take home the silver.
Meanwhile the U14s gained valuable 11-a-side experience against much more experienced teams. They displayed great discipline in their shape and approach to compete and should be proud of their efforts having only been defeated 2-0.
AquaPanthers
Our competitive swimmers continued to dominate this year. They participated in two invitationals in Term 1. The AquaPanthers placed 3rd in a Shanghai Swim League (SSL) meet in October and 4th in the 2021 ISB & SAS Swimvitational in November. In addition many of the swimmers posted new personal bests.
Says Coach Zorro Chen, "The AquaPanthers made impressive progress in Term 1 with high levels of personal best times at both meets. I believe the AquaPanthers will continue to be one of the strongest international school swim teams in Shanghai thanks to the commitment of swimmers, coaches, and parents.”
Dulwich Fencing
Several Dulwich Fencers competed in The Shanghai Schools Association Championships Foil and the Shanghai Schools Federation Championships Foil. These are major competitions, each attracting well over 3,000 competitors.
Aaron W placed 3rd in the Shanghai Schools Association Championships Foil and 3rd in the Shanghai Schools Federation Championships Foil. Sunny W placed 3rd in the Shanghai Schools Federation Girls Epee. Eden G placed 3rd in the Wang Lei Club Championships.
Synchronised Swimming
Dulwich Pudong SUTI Synchronized Swimming Team made outstanding achievements in the 2nd Wellington Cup Synchronized Swimming Championship in October. Nearly 100 swimmers from six international schools across the country competed.
Our athletes won gold medals in Solo Routine, Duet Routine, and Team Free Routine, whilst nine Dulwich students teamed up to take fourth place in Artistic Combo.
A tradition of excellence
Dulwich Pudong enjoys a long tradition of sporting excellence, as the banners hanging from the rafters of our Upper Gym attest. Over the last 20 years we have won numerous titles in Shanghai, within China and abroad. Our athletes always compete with our College sporting values in mind: Dedication, Character, Spirit.
Our students enjoy truly world-class sports facilities on our campus including:

- Large, multi-purpose gym in the Junior School
- Full-size tennis court in the Junior School quad
- Two large, grass-covered sports fields with running track at the Main Campus totaling 30,000 square meters as well as a sports field at DUCKS
- A large hall for sports at DUCKS
We ensure that all boys and girls have equal opportunity to experience competitive play. Dulwich Pudong students also enjoy the opportunity to compete against the best of the best through our membership in SISAC (Shanghai International Schools Activities Conference), ACAMIS (The Association of China and Mongolia International Schools), and FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia).
Competitive sports are critical for development of teamwork skills, sportsmanship, as well as personal accountability.
David Dutch, Director of Physical Education and Sport, reminds us just how important sports are to the holistic learning experience. "It's great to see the students out on the field giving their all. Competitive sports are critical for development of teamwork skills, sportsmanship, as well as personal accountability. Dulwich Pudong has always been known as a great sports school so hopefully we will see more fixtures happening this year, regulations permitting."
Regardless of the results, we celebrate the efforts our athletes who give their all and strive for the best.
