Fostering Creativity and Collaboration: IB Geography Conference

Dulwich Pudong hosted a large-scale Geography Conference exclusively for IB students last term. With a focus on creativity, collaboration, and enriching geographical knowledge, this conference aimed to deepen students' understanding of urban issues and foster innovative solutions. Drawing 111 students from different schools across the region, the event provided a dynamic platform for exploration, problem-solving, and the exchange of ideas.

Students were tasked with comprehending and resolving economic, social, and environmental challenges within urban environments. Specifically, they were challenged to design a city that embraced a diversified economy while addressing critical issues such as homelessness, obesity/food deserts, crime, environmental degradation, and natural hazards like wildfires and tectonic movements.

Working collaboratively in teams, students produced an annotated land use map that explained the positioning of different land use types and sustainable building designs. Throughout the day, teams earned points by making decisions on the location of specific land uses within the development area, considering factors such as affordability. At the conclusion of the conference, students presented their solutions to teachers, and the teams' points were tallied to determine the winners.

One notable aspect of the conference was the challenging task of working in large, mixed groups comprised of students from different schools. Despite this, students showcased remarkable delegation skills and effective communication throughout the problem-solving exercises. Some groups produced exceptionally clear and comprehensive land use maps, while others delivered professional presentations to communicate their ideas confidently.

Participating in the Geography Conference provided the students with numerous benefits. By engaging in this immersive experience, students developed their communication skills, gained confidence in collaborating with unfamiliar peers, and acquired a deeper understanding of urban issues and potential solutions. The conference not only enriched their classroom knowledge but also empowered them to think critically and creatively as they tackled real-world challenges.
