Junior School Triumphs as FOBISIA Primary Maths Challenge Winner

On Thursday, May 9th, our Junior School Maths teams, comprised of four talented Year 5 students and four exceptional Year 6 students, embarked on a journey to Thailand. They were set to compete against some of the most prestigious international schools in Asia in the renowned FOBISIA Primary Maths Challenge.

Over the course of two days filled with challenging maths events, our students were pushed to their limits, requiring them to collaborate effectively to tackle hands-on problems, complex calculations, and demanding written questions. It was the Year 6 team who emerged as champions, outperforming 20 other schools and 40 teams to secure this prestigious title.

Demonstrating unparalleled dedication to the Dulwich values of courage, self-awareness, integrity, and inclusivity, our Year 6 team orchestrated an awe-inspiring comeback. Despite a challenging start, placing 11th in the construction round, they remained undeterred, their sights set on victory. Their efforts bore fruit as they clinched wins in both the Maths Masterminds and the Amazing Race rounds, not conceding a single point in either. Notably, in the Amazing Race—a test of both intellect and speed requiring teams to complete 10 distinct challenges—their performance was unmatched, finishing a remarkable 10-15 minutes ahead of their closest competitors.

In the crucial individual round, Seth L and Celina K distinguished themselves impressively, being the only participants among 164 to achieve perfect scores and earn gold medals. Jacie J added to our medal tally with another gold, meaning our school proudly accounted for three of the nine gold medals awarded. Taeseong J's exceptional performance was rewarded with a well-deserved silver medal.

Despite facing older competitors, our Year 5 team showcased their skill and potential by finishing 25th out of 41 teams, with Dylan G earning a bronze medal in the individual round—an achievement that speaks volumes of their dedication and promise.
