DUCKS Parents Stay and Play

0

Parents were given a unique insight into what learning is like in an Early Years classroom during recent open-door events at DUCKS. During recent Toddler Stay and Play and Nursery Messy Play, children and their parents and caregivers explored some fun and creative Halloween-themed activities based around wet and dry sensory play. Such activities aim to help children develop cognitive growth, while also enhancing their sensory abilities. In addition, children also learn and develop vital skills, such as communication and language, fine motor skills, mathematics, and problem-solving.

Year 1 Toy Story

1

Parents of Year 1 students came down to DUCKS last Thursday and Friday to find out what their children have been up to during the term. Students have been very busy in Term 1 as they worked to complete their Toys topic through a series of creative projects.

Firstly, they became authors and illustrators and wrote their versions of the popular story Dogger. They then became toy designers and, using the design thinking process, created their own toys using new skills acquired in SE21. Lastly, as artists, the children have been busy creating artwork in each of the Year 1 classrooms inspired by toys.

Junior School Concerts

2

Weeks of practice paid off for our youngest Junior School students as they took to the stage for the end of term Year 3 Strings Concert and Year 5 Band Concert.

3

The concerts were not only a wonderful way to mark a term of musical learning with their parents, but also provided students with a valuable opportunity to gain experience of being part of a wider ensemble, supporting their development as musicians. Congratulations to all those students for practising hard every week and thank you to parents for supporting this process.

Globejetters Exhibition

4

After a month of preparation, Year 3 students hosted the Globejetters Exhibition last week, a highlight of the Junior School calendar. This event showcased their research and critical thinking skills developed in the classroom. Students explored various countries through perspectives such as geography, culture, food, and customs, presenting their findings through handmade displays, models of landmarks, and diagrams of traditional snacks. Parents were invited to tour the exhibition in the 1619 Suite, experiencing a whirlwind adventure around the globe.

A Whole New World with Years 5 and 6

5

Students from Years 5 and 6 took to the stage this month, bringing all the magic of Arabian Nights to Dulwich Pudong with their retelling of Disney’s Aladdin Kids. From the stellar performances by the main cast and ensemble, to the amazing props (designed by the Props CCA) and sets, the packed audiences followed Aladdin's enchanting journey after discovering a magical lamp that changes his life forever. Congratulations to the cast and crew for delivering such an amazing production after just 13 weeks of rehearsals! The resilience demonstrated on stage and the confidence of our young performers, who thoroughly enjoyed their time on stage, was remarkable.

Disney's Aladdin Kids was presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com

Dulwich Got Talent

6

This month marked the return of the highly anticipated Dulwich Got Talent event for Senior School students. DGT is an annual showcase where students are invited to reveal their hidden talents to their peers. The finalist round consisted of five performances that stunned the entire Senior School with their creativity and skill. Two exceptionally talented groups showcased a dance routine and rock classics, but it was the solo performances who came out on top. Well done to all performers for delivering such a fantastic concert.

IB Learner Profile Awards

7

Our Year 12 and 13 IB Learner Profile Awards recognize students who exemplify the qualities outlined in the IB Learner Profile, particularly the attribute of being caring. A celebration event last month highlighted our commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to our community. We are proud of all our award recipients for embodying these values and making a difference in the lives of their peers.

Welcome to the Brain Museum

8

Our Year 12 Psychology students hosted a fascinating 'Brain Museum' where they presented their research projects on brain localization and its functions. This interactive event allowed them to share their findings with Year 11 students and staff, sparking interest and discussions about the complexities of the brain. The students did an excellent job of making the information accessible and engaging, demonstrating their understanding of a crucial topic in psychology.

University Mythbusting for Parents

9

Our Year 13 students have started the important process of submitting their applications for universities, looking to take their next big step in life. Some are already receiving early offers! Our parents understandably have lots of questions about the university selection, testing and application process. To help them to unpick thorny issues, tackle common myths, and explain more about their work with our students, our University & Careers Counselling (UCC) team recently arranged a special Parent Academy on these key topics.

Football 7s Tournament in Phuket

10

Some 43 students proudly represented the College at the annual Football 7s tournament in Phuket. Our coaching staff were left impressed by all the players' resilience, with the Under 13 Girls regrouping after some setbacks to secure a Plate Win, while older students showcased exceptional skill and determination. A highlight was the strong support among teams, with the U18 Girls cheering on the U13 Boys and vice versa, reflecting outstanding sportsmanship and camaraderie. Overall, the weekend emphasized teamwork and mutual support, marking a significant achievement for the players.

Dulwich Talks

11

Dulwich Talks - our Senior School’s keynote academic event of the year - returned this year to explore a fascinating yet complex theme, The Burden of Choice. The day-long symposium, organised by the Student Voice portfolio, gave older students the opportunity to engage in stimulating multi-disciplinary talks (by keynote speakers Ole Gerdau, Dr Natalie Kenny, Jonas Haulin and Michael Huang), workshops, simulations, and panel discussions focused on the main theme. The event concluded with the annual Anand Debate between students and teachers - won by the teachers!

Planet Hack

12

Planet Hack is a bespoke collaborative STEM hackathon created between our Dulwich College sister schools and The Australian National University in 2022, with the aim of  inspiring students to address global issues. Over the course of this two-day hackathon, Senior School students of all skill levels had the chance to participate in hands-on workshops that not only enhanced their STEM and critical thinking skills but also empowered them to develop solutions to problems our planet is facing.

Shanghai Swimming League

13

On November 16, Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong hosted the second round of the Shanghai Swimming League (SSL), welcoming 632 swimmers to our campus, with another 490 competing at DCSZ in Suzhou, bringing together 22 schools overall. 80 AquaPanthers and 10 DSA swimmers from Levels 5 and Pre-Competition joined. Swimmers were allowed to participate in up to three individual events, with the fastest competitors joining relay teams. Our AquaPanthers performed exceptionally well, finishing second in the overall team rankings. In individual categories, our girls secured second place overall, and the boys finished third.
