Junior School Sports Day, held over two days and our two large outdoor fields (the Sports Field and the Golden Bridge Field), was a huge success. This year for the first time the event took place over the entire day, giving more time for students and teams to strive for their best, resulting in 21 record-breaking performances!

"Sports Day was created both for athletic performance, but as well for challenging the classes to work together as a team," says Andrew Coomer, Head of Junior School PE. "Students were able to develop their leadership and cooperation skills as well as perform at a high level individually."

Sports Day was an extension of the Dulwich Olympian programme, launched by the PE department to compensate for the lack of inter-school fixtures due to COVID. Earlier in the year each student received a collectible Dulwich Olympian key ring with the aim of obtaining ribbons for competing in different events, including Sports Day.

Sports Day featured six athletic events, (60m, 200m, Quoit throw, Javelin, Long Jump and Triple Jump), and six teambuilding class events (Old Skool Relay, Wacky Water, Jumping Jenga, Feed Me Food Challenge and Inflatable World).

Says Karen Peart, Junior School PE Teacher, "All the hard work the kids had put into their PE lessons really shined through on Sports Day. I can’t believe how many school athletic records were broken! The day wasn’t just about athletic prowess, though; it was really impressive to witness how the students used their head and heart skills throughout the day to overcome challenges. Well done, Junior school, you made us proud!"

Says Ellenie Coughlan, Junior School PE Teacher, “There was something for everyone on Sports Day, seeing the kids’ excitement, their energy and the fun they had made the PE team proud of the outstanding efforts and achievements on the day.”

Gold Medalists

Three of our gold medalists (Felix, Katherine and Chloe)

Of particular note were the accomplishments of three students: Katherine C, Year 5, Felix Z, Year 3 and Chloe W, Year 3. Together they walked away with 18 gold medals; a quite remarkable achievement given that they excelled across a variety of disciplines - running, jumping and throwing.

Which event did you find most difficult?

Katherine W
The 800m was really difficult. You need a lot of endurance and it was my first time to run 800m. I was really nervous at the beginning over how the results would be. Eventually I overcame it and tried something new. And, surprisingly, I won 1st place!
- Katherine W, Year 6

How did you feel when you received your medals in Assembly?

How will you feel seeing your name in the College record books next year?

Felix Z
I can’t believe that I won so many medals; I was very happy.
- Felix Z, Year 3
Chloe W
I am very happy and proud of myself.
- Chloe W, Year 3

Congratulations to all the students who competed, trying their best for themselves, their class and their House!
