Congratulations to the class of 2020

At Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong, as we support the holistic development of our students in the academic and college/career spheres of their lives, we try to get students to think about the “why” when it comes to their tertiary aspirations, not the “where”. We discuss fit, match, financial affordability, and the students’ excitement about their own postsecondary plans. Our team works with the Heads of Year and Tutors with lessons and programming to help students build coping skills for their impending transitions. We want students to have these life skills at their disposal no matter where they land after Senior School so that they will persist and graduate. As you may have heard us say in one of our presentations, it is not the getting in that matters – it is the getting out!

In the beginning of Year 12, students were asked to create a mantra with the opener I will… A few of the submissions were: “I will advocate for the unheard.” “I will create an environment that values success and embraces failure.” “I will always commit to something I choose to do. I will always face the music/I will never run.” “I will thank whoever hands me criticism in any form, because that is what really pushes me to improve.” “I will embrace change and learn to adapt accordingly.” “I will do one thing a day that makes me uncomfortable.” When I think back over the last two years, I can honestly say that the Class of 2020 has embraced change with resilience and fortitude.

I think it is so incredibly important for students to learn as quickly as they can what makes them special – what skills, talents, passions, and perspectives they uniquely possess that can be harnessed to achieve their goals. That awareness is going to take them much farther than the school named on their new university sweatshirt. At DCSPD, we have nurtured students to not only be successful in the world as it is, but more: to be a passionate, engaged, curious, and empathic individual, desirous of bringing about the world as it could be.

We are excited about the special contributions the students will make in the next years and for them to continue to explore and celebrate the “why.”

University Counselling Team Update

In early February, when it appeared as if we would not be returning to school for some time, the University Counselling office reached out to our university contacts around the world to inform them of the impact that school closure was having on our students. It was at the beginning of what we now know would become a world-wide pandemic. We were met with reassurances that the universities had measures in place to deal with special circumstances. As the weeks have worn on and COVID-19 has spread, the words of assurance have continued, and we cannot feel more supported by our university colleagues.

Over the last few months our team has participated in webinars, written articles for university publications and met with elected officials in the United States House of Representatives to educate admissions officers about issues we face as a global community. These avenues have given Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong much needed platforms to describe our efforts in E-Learning and the implications on our IGCSE and International Baccalaureate students.

Throughout this time period we have been inspired by our students’ resilience, humour, optimism, and support of each other. University Counselling classes have continued for Years 10-13 and we have met individually with students and their parents to assist with choosing their IB and IGCSE courses for next year.
